Brief History
Jigme Wangchuck Power Technical Institute (JWPTI), located at Dekiling, Sarpang District, Bhutan, was established in 2012. The institute was set up with support from the Government of India (GoI) under the Project Tied Assistance (PTA). The institute aimed to train skilled workforce to support the country’s growing need for manpower in the hydropower and electrical sectors. It was named after His Majesty the Third King of Bhutan, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, in honour of his vision for modernizing Bhutan.
JWPTI primarily focuses on Electrical and Mechanical trades, offering Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) for the aspiring young Bhutanese. Over time, its programs expanded in other fields such as construction, Renewable Energy and Electronic Sector. As Bhutan’s hydropower sector became a crucial part of the national economy, JWPTI will play an essential role by supplying trained technicians for major infrastructure projects.
JWPTI operates under the Department of Workforce Planning and Skills Development (DWPSD) Ministry of Education and Skills Development (MoESD), continuing its mission to provide quality TVET -by embracing digital transformation and 21st Century Training. It is recognized as a leading institute contributing to Bhutan’s socio-economic development and achieving the goal of building a skilled workforce for sustainable development.
